| Anhui Provincial Library is a comprehensive public
library run by the state, a cultural information institution
for public welfare. It is situated by the side of Bao river,
standing there as one of the key projects and characteristic
buildings of Anhui province. |

| After ninety years of accumulation,
the library has possessed a great deal of storage on various
kinds of subjects. It formed its own characteristics especially
on collection of the Hui-school documents. Among the 2.36 million
volumes of the library, the 40,000 are traditional thread-bound
books, over 30,700 are rare books. The earliest document the
library owned are the block-printed editions represented by
the "Zhi Da Chong Xiu Xuan He Bo au Tu Lu" of the
Yuan Dynasty. Those include such as "Zeng Guang Zhu Shi
Yin Bian Tang Liu Xian Sheng'Ji" of Yuan Dynasty, and "Si
Shu Ren Wu Kao" of Ming Dynasty stood in the second group.
Moreover, the library paid a great attention on the accumulating
works of Wan-native sages in the Ming and the Qing Dynasties
in which they possessed an important role in the history of
Chinese Cultural Development. |

| The Anhui Provincial Library was originally
set up in February 1913,its predecessor was the Anhui Province-set
Library. Due to wars, it experienced several removals. In April
1953, the library was formally founded on the basis of Hefei
Library of Wanbei area. The floor space then was 1,100m2 and
the site was located at the west bank of Xiaoyaojin Park. In
December 1962, it moved to current place, and the floor space
added to 6,345 m2. In 1981, with the completion of a seven-store
stack building, the number raised to 13,900 m2. In October 1998,
a great expansion on the site started, the total floor area
jumped to 23,000m2 three years after. In December 2002, the
formal main building got renewed, and the overall floor space
of the library expended to 36,900m2 with more than 1,400 seats
in the reading area and 4.2 million volumes of books can be
stored. The new building equipped with a lot of advanced computer
techniques, telecommunication techniques and security- providing
systems. The PDS it used ensures a speedy and flexible network.
In addition to a library resources-sharing through concentrated
resources administrated and managed by different levels and
multi-online networks, the library has also designed more than11,
100 information access points which can easily get connected
with those main information networks both at home and abroad.

| he Anhui Provincial Library will take
a new look in the 21st century. It sets a high target at becoming
a digital and modernized library, which can help promoting the
development of national economy, raising the property of the
people, and bringing a perfect combination of technology and
culture into reality by adopting advanced digital information
system and modem accessing means. With all these, the library
will no doubt be not only an information center and a cultural
education center, but also an important information hinge and
position for civilization construction of Anhui province. |
